English as a Second Language

 
   

Basics of spoken and written American English for foreign-born learners. Classes in groups of ten or less are customized by job-specific requirements. Content and vocabulary are determined through consultation with sponsoring company.

ESL I assumes little or no knowledge of English. Learners are introduced to basic expressions, sounds and sentence structure.

ESL II builds on the skills introduced in ESL I to increase understanding and the ability to communicate more complex thought. Increased emphasis on original   expression and pronunciation.

Advanced American English:

Better English
With the help of   a trained language professional, major improvements in spoken communication can be achieved. Learn to speak comfortably and clearly in American English and be understood more easily in all situations. Individual   attention for greater progress. No more than 5 in each class. Private lessons also available for those who value complete individual focus.

Advanced Grammar & Writing
A "bridge-the-gaps" course. A grammar review with concentration on specific questions and issues of common difficulty. Customized to participant needs.

Many advanced learners of American English wish to have access to continuing support following their classes. Some simply need to have reports, memo or correspondence proof-read and edited, or be able to have access to a source for expert English assistance. We can provide this support to enable a smooth transition to confidence and capability in writing American English.

Interview Skills for the Foreign-Born
Career transitions present unique challenges for the foreign-born speaker of American English Gain confidence and learn techniques for successful self-presentation in American business. Identify and correct cultural and pronunciation issues which may be a barrier to that second interview or final offer.

Corrected Conversation:   You've taken a lot of classes and can express yourself in your target language. Facilitated, free-form conversations with individual correction by native speaker will increase your comfort when speaking.

Basic Presentation Skills
This course consists of two half day (4 hour) seminars.
Attendees are taught the basic skills necessary to a successful presentation.   They will make live presentations and receive a detailed instructor's critique the first day and will return the next day to practice what they've learned.   Each attendee will receive a communications plan with suggested exercises to practice for improvement

Advanced Presentation Skills
One Day
Experience with a presentation skills class is recommended.   Participants take their skills to the next level. Advanced techniques for the experienced communicator are taught, including movement and voice work. Script creation tips along with vocal and physical expressiveness are explored for maximum effect.
